The Canada Greener Homes Initiative offers loans and grants for retrofits and home evaluations. Home insulation, windows and doors, airtightness, mechanical systems, and renewable energy systems are among the approved retrofits.
To ensure that you will be eligible for the grants and/or loans at the end of the procedure, it is crucial that you carefully read all the eligibility requirements and initiative requirements. To qualify, you must complete an EnerGuide evaluation both before and after the retrofit.
The initiative gives one access to the following:
- from $125 to $5,000 in grants
- To receive a portion of your investment back for qualified home upgrades
- Up to $600
- According to your pre- and post-retrofit expenditures’ maximum contribution EnerGuide assessments
- You can get up to $40,000 in interest-free loans with a 10-year repayment period to help you with significant home renovations.
Eligibility for the grant
You’re not eligible for the Canada Greener Home Initiative if you fall under the following category:
- I am a landlord who rents out my space.
- I’m a tenant.
- Without initially having my home evaluated by EnerGuide, I have already begun or finished my retrofits.
- My house was only constructed a few months ago (but you can apply once your home is at least 6 months old).
- We are remodeling the house windows and doors before making it my regular abode, so I haven’t moved in yet.
If you meet the requirements for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, you must:
- Submit an application and wait for Natural Resources Canada to approve it.
- perform an EnerGuide evaluation before and after the retrofit
- Perform at least one qualified and advised retrofit listed in your energy advisor’s Renovation Upgrade Report. The award is not available for retrofits carried out without a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.
- If you are replacing windows and heating equipment, make sure the installations are done by a licensed expert, if applicable, and buy all products in Canada. Purchase equipment and products from NRCan’s authorized products list. Only orders placed via Canadian internet distributors are eligible for online purchasing.
- Until March 31, 2028, maintain copies of all of your paperwork.
Except for thermostats, all mechanical systems must be installed by a qualified specialist. Ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, cold climate air source heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, furnaces (available only to residents of northern and off-grid communities), and boilers are examples of mechanical systems (eligible for northern and off-grid community residents only).
